This Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) informative course enlightens participants on the many issues relating to abuse and equips participants with the necessary tools to help reduce and stop abuse from occurring. This interactive seminar allows participants to apply concepts leant by engaging in group activities. This course is a core requirement for anyone providing service to an APD client and meets the APD requirement for training.

Course Overview:
The Zero Tolerance Training is organized into the following modules:

  • Module 1: Defining Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of Persons with Developmental Disabilities
    Module Description: In this section you’ll learn what actions can be defined as abuse, neglect and exploitation. You’ll also learn about some reasons why caregivers mistreat those in their care. Finally, you’ll learn about how the desire for power and control can contribute to such mistreatment.
  • Module 2: Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation
    Module Description: In this section you will learn about various indicators of abuse, neglect, and exploitation, both in the caregiver and the person receiving care.
  • Module 3: Reporting to the Abuse Hotline
    Module Description: The purpose of this section is to learn about how you should report abuse, neglect, and exploitation and what may happen next.
  • Module 4: Prevention and Safety Planning
    Module Description: This section will identify a number of ways in which you can assist persons with developmental disabilities decrease the likelihood that they will ever have to experience abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Course Learning Objectives:
At the end of training, you will be able to:

1. Define caregiver.
2. Define the five general types of caregiver abuse.
3. Describe the reasons why people with developmental disabilities are more likely to be abused, neglected, or exploited.
4. Explain how power and control contribute to caregiver abuse.
5. List statistics related to the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of people with developmental disabilities.
6. List who should report abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
7. Describe strategies to apply when assessing a person for abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
8. Explain issues to consider when assessing a person for abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
9. List indicators of abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
10. Explain how to report abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
11. Identify common barriers to reporting abuse, neglect, and exploitation
12. Explain procedures for investigating reported abuse.
13. Describe methods which can be used to prevent, abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
14. Describe how to create and maintain a safe living environment of people with developmental disabilities.
