New program to help teens, young adults with disabilities connect with peers, work toward independence and develop social, job readiness skills
OAKLAND PARK, Florida (September 8, 2026) – Teens and young adults with disabilities who are interested in creative, digital and performing arts have a new place to explore their interests and connect with peers while building critical social and job readiness skills needed for the next step in their journey.
Arc Broward recently launched the Academy of Arts & Recreation (AAR) in Oakland Park, offering community-based recreational activities as part of a prevocational program designed to foster independence and create a sense of belonging and community among young adults with disabilities, ages 16 to 26.
“The Academy of Arts & Recreation is redefining what prevocational services can and should be,” said Jennifer Saint Louis, Ph.D., vice president of workforce services, Arc Broward. “For too long, families have faced a gap in meaningful transition and post-transition opportunities that foster continued growth, purpose and independence. AAR was intentionally designed to fill that gap by blending the arts, recreation, volunteerism and real-world experiences into a dynamic learning environment where participants develop the confidence, workplace readiness, life skills and relationships needed to thrive.”
Classes are offered Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and will include recreational and wellness activities, community-based learning and volunteer opportunities. With a 1:10 staff-to-participant ratio and through individualized plans carefully designed to meet individual goals and needs, participants will have the opportunity to develop real-world employability and daily living skills in a supportive and inclusive environment while working toward greater independence.
“More than a program, AAR is a bridge between potential and possibility, empowering every participant to discover their strengths, pursue their passions, and build a future filled with purpose, connection and opportunity,” said Saint Louis.
AAR is located at 3421 North Dixie Highway, Oakland Park. To schedule a tour, register for classes or for more information, please visit arcbroward.com, call 954-746-9400 or email aar@arcbroward.com.
